Steve’s 1981″Blackout” Firebird
This Firebird was purchased new by Steve’s mother in 1981. She drove it for only 3 years before retiring from her job and not long later it was pulled into the garage and parked. For several years it only emerged for start up and to get washed. Eventually the pro-touring bug bit Steve and he saw the great potential of the second gen F body. Steve gladly wrote mom a check and drove the F body into his own garage to begin tear down. He quickly realized running a business and taking care of a family took precedence over Steve’s hot rodding hobby so he turned to Speedtech to take over the reigns of transforming this relatively docile Firebird into a real street menace.
First thing we addressed was the suspension. Out came the old and mini tubs for larger tires were installed and then the floor was undercoated semi gloss black. A full Speedtech Track time suspension was put together, up front this package features high clearance tubular control arms supporting a Chicane coilover conversion with Ridetech Coilover shocks and ATS AFX tall spindles. Braking duty is accomplished with Baer 14″ drilled and slotted rotors engulfed by huge 6 piston calipers. Steering is handled by an ATS 12.7:1 670 box, and a tubular front sway bar controls the body roll. The rear is filled with our famous Torque Arm rear suspension and a Strange 9″ Ford rear axle, capped off with Baer 14″ rotors and 6 piston calipers. Rolling stock consists of 19×10″ and 19×12″ Forgeline RB3Cs wrapped in Nitto 285-35-19 and huge 345-30-19 Invos. For motorvation the smog control laden original engine was replaced by a thumping 525 HP LS3 backed by a T-56 6 speed trans.
Visually, this car needed a serious manly overhaul. First stop was grafting in Trans Am fender vents, and bolting on Trans Am style flares and rear spoiler. The firewall was smoothed, side marker lights deleted, and custom exhaust ports fabricated, while a custom hood scoop was formed mimicking a large shaker style scoop. The end result for the hood was settled in with Ring Brothers hood hinges. After the body was smoothed to perfection, super gloss black paint was laid down. Combined with the matte bronze centers and gloss outer rims of the wheels, the car now takes on a dark sinister look. Steve couldn’t be happier. We wonder now what mom thinks?
